MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Marines volunteer to protect their country, police officers do the same for their community. –
The Onslow County community gathered to honor fallen police officers during the National Peace Officers Memorial Day Observance at the Jacksonville Commons Memorial in Jacksonville May 13.
President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the week of May 15 National Police Week, which pays special recognition to those people who’ve sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
“We’re here to honor and remember those officers who have served our community,” said Ernie Lee, the 4th Judicial District Attorney in Onslow County. “They are that thin blue line that protects our rights and safety.”
Police officers are known to always be on call, just as Marines are, added Lee.
“When we are at work, officers are keeping the peace,” said Lee. “When we are in our bed at nights, fast asleep, officers are out there keeping the peace. Their sense of duty, obligation and responsibility is how we should live our lives. We must never forget to honor peace officers, not only during this week but all times. They are on duty around the clock.”
Naval Criminal Investigative Services agents, military policemen and service members were in attendance to honor their fallen brothers during the gathering.
“I feel Marines and peace officers both feel a strong sense of duty and an unbreakable bond of camaraderie with their brothers and sisters in uniform,” said Sgt. Maj. William Oldenburg, Marine Corps Air Station New River sergeant major. “They both have a commitment to serve others in need, and provide security within the nation and local community.”
During the observance, a radio-call was announced to signify those officers who are no longer serving today.
Deputy Jerry Barber, Deputy Steven Boehm, Officer Terry Lanier, Special Agent Bret McKee, Captain Jerry Scantling, Detective William Whitehead, and Sergeant Jeffery Greene have all lost their lives serving Onslow County.
“I do want to recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their profession and people,” said Sammy Phillips, the City of Jacksonville mayor. “Two of these men who have passed were good friends of mine, and there’s not a day that goes by I don’t think about those men and what they did for us.”
