CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Garbage lay on the waterfront, a collage of unnatural materials covering the natural environment. Men and women stood determined, donned gloves and armed themselves with black bags. They were ready for a day at the beach.
Marines from Marine Corps Engineer School aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune collected discarded trash and recyclables from the waterfront in North Topsail Friday, as part of Keep Onslow Beautiful, an initiative designed to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments, according to www.onslowcountync.gov.
Throughout the day, the Marines filled garbage bags with discarded materials including glass, aluminum cans, fishing gear and a few unexpected items such as lawn chairs, baby products and car parts.
"This is actually the second year this group has been out here to this location cleaning up," said Lisa Rider, Onslow County Solid Waste assistant director. "The goal today was to clean up unnatural materials in a natural environment. By doing this we are all working together to improve our community and our environment."
The Marines collected a total of 3,600 pounds of trash, 90 percent of which was recyclable.
"With the abundance of Marine life here in the area, it felt really good to be out here," said Pfc. Nolan Giroux, a student with MCES. "It’s always rewarding to step away and do something for the good of the community. It was a lot of hard work, but worth it in the end."
