MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - The Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 24 Black Knights dethroned 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment “Kings of Battle” in the intramural softball championship game at Annex Field on Saturday.

Service members of both teams were awake by 8 a.m. in preparation for the final games; however, MALS-24 had a slight advantage since they were up to play and won against Pookela, allowing them to warm up, according to Black Knight shortstop Casey Horton.

“(Because) we had a game this morning, we had the chance to get our bats live and get stretched out,” Horton said.

The final teams had squared off prior to the championship, allowing for both teams to gauge how the actual championship game would roll. It was apparent within the first three innings that the Black Knights would have the upper hand, with a score of 13 to 0 at the bottom of the 3rd inning.

“We struggled during the first game and we had a lot of errors in the outfield,” said 1st Bn., 12th Marines pitcher Bradley Diamond. “We got ourselves in a better position for the second game, and I think we played a lot better.”

Fans, family members and other intramural softball players filled the stands, and cheered as several of the Black Knight batters launched home runs under the blue sky and beyond the field’s gates, which became commonplace throughout the game.

“We’re a tight-knit group,” Horton said. “(All of us) come from the same command. We are not one of those teams who picks other people. We work together, hangout together and play softball together.”

The “Kings of Battle” tried to fight the growing lead but spirits smoldered as the Black Knights were running through the home plate like clockwork. The team rallied and their resiliency allowed them to take back the playing field, and hope began to surface.

By the fifth inning, 1st Bn., 12th Marines was only down by four points, but only had 15 minutes of game play left. They became more determined to take the champion crown; but unfortunately, their determination could not match up to the Black Knight’s royally tight ball playing.

With a final score of 19-14, the Black Knights seized the championship title.

“Today they were definitely the better team,” Diamond said. “They have a lot of really good players, and they always hit the ball really well. Today, unfortunately, we weren’t able to recover from our mistakes as well as they did. It was a good season. It’s a good way for all ranks to come out and have a good time and have a little bit of camaraderie and sportsmanship and it’s a good event for everybody.”
