    Marine Corps Air Station Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. - Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and the Marines of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron received the Chief of Naval Operations Aviation Safety Award for 2014, Thursday, June 6.

Brig. Gen. Edward Banta, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West, presented the award to Lt. Col. Michael Swift, the commanding officer of H&Hs, who accepted the award on behalf of the squadron.

“This was a total team Yuma effort,” said Capt. David Coleman, the station Aviation Safety Officer. “It took everybody doing their part to earn this award. Yuma is the busiest air station in the Marine Corps and to show that we are one of the safest says a lot about who we are.”

The Chief of Naval Operations annual awards program recognizes Navy ships, Navy and Marine Corps installations and people for outstanding performance, according to the Navy’s official website. To receive the CNO award the recipient has to be chosen from under an aircraft controlling custodian, such as Marine Corps Installation West.

According to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Safety awards are given to recognize operational excellence, exemplary safety contributions and to further the Naval Aviation Safety Program.

“There are a few gentlemen that must be recognized for this, for the vital role they played,” said Coleman. “I want to thank Greg McShane, the Airfield Operations Officer, Maj. John Gibson, the Operations Officer for MCAS Yuma, Brian Lindstrom, the Ground Safety Manager, and Lt. Col. Swift."

“All these men have a very strenuous job and it’s a job where if everything is going perfect, nobody recognizes them, but if there is one mishap, everyone looks right at them,” said Coleman. “It’s great to see that they get the recognition they deserve on such a grand scale.”

MCAS Yuma Conducts more than 200,000 flight operations a year, all other Marine Corps air stations average about 90,000 a year. With the Weapons and Tactics Instructor course, Marine Aircraft Group 13, as well as other various visiting units conducting flight operations throughout the year, H&HS has found a way to keep the Marine Corps’ busiest air station as one of the safest.

“What you guys do here does not go unnoticed,” said Banta. “More so, it’s admired and looked up to as a standard for Marine and Military aviation.”
