    Story by Capt. Fernando Ochoa

    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

FORT MCCOY, Wis. – Maj. Leonard Zech, 650th Regional Support Group engineer, and three other Soldiers attended a Field Sanitation Team class, where they learned the importance of a clean facility, during the Combat Support Training Exercise at Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin June 7-8.

Master Sgt. Leo Hunt, engineering NCOIC, Sgt. Alicia Tamayo, engineering specialist, and Pfc. Alfonso Martinez, logistics specialist, also attended the seminar.

The Field Sanitation Team class is designed to teach its students the responsibilities and far-reaching effects of the health of their fellow Soldiers and how the success of this program can ensure the health of their unit.

“We want to emphasize the importance of keeping their area of operation as clean as possible,” said Sgt. Darletha Dorsey, preventive medicine specialist and instructor. “We also want our students to know the importance of hydrating and knowing the symptoms of heat injuries.”

The forerunner of the FST program was established during WW II when it became apparent that the control of malaria and other diseases was beyond the capabilities of engineer and medical units.

Later, the vector control detail became FST training and expanded to include field water supply, food service sanitation, waste disposal and personal hygiene.

“I learned a lot about the dangers of contracting diseases from animals and insects,” said Hunt. “Many of these diseases can be prevented by keeping yourself clean.”

The reason why the FST is important is because it is responsible for those preventive medicine measures that effect units as a whole or are beyond the resources of the individual Soldier.

“This training is very important to the 650th RSG because we have many down trace companies and units who we can also train with this valuable information,” said Zech. “Our hope is this training will help us if we have to deploy overseas.”

Through a variety of measures, the Army attempts to make the Soldier’s surrounding a healthful as possible, but it should be noted that the individual Soldier makes the difference.

The 650th is committed to the safety and well being of all its Soldiers and the Soldiers who attended this very important training will continue that commitment.
