WAIMANALO, Hawaii- Throughout an illustrious Army career, a Soldier can see three presidents, six secretary of defenses’, two uniform changes and three tattoo policies. While it’s common for Soldiers to change their Military Occupational Specialty once or twice, Staff Sgt. Dominick Guidice, a Military Policeman in the 330th MP Company from the California Army National Guard, has done that five times.
“Every chance you have an opportunity to better yourself, take it because it will only give you a rich and full life,” said Staff Sgt. Guidice. “I am a firm believer of that.”
Staff Sgt. Guidice has been a wheeled vehicle technician, M1 Abrams tank system maintainer, turbine engine repairer, military police, UH-60 helicopter repairer and a CH-47 helicopter repairer.
“I currently have 6 MOS’s,” said Staff Sgt. Guidice. “I started on active duty as a mechanic. I worked on everything from a helicopter to a tank. My current MOS is 31 bravo, which is military police.”
Whether it was mentoring his Soldiers or attaining another MOS, Staff Sgt. Guidice is always hungry for more knowledge.
“I was told by my mentors to get everything out of the military as I could as far as training goes,” said Staff Sgt. Guidice. “If the military is going to send you to a qualification school, take it and take every opportunity they give you.”
The staff sergeant has held his current MOS since 2009 and he loves it. Guidice has been able to use his military experiences with relatable jobs in the civilian world. He wouldn’t refer to it as an advantage among his fellow soldiers, but having more experience than them.
“Employers like to look at my resume to see what I have accomplished in the military,” said Guidice. “My military jobs give me an edge and make me stand out amongst my peers in the civilian world.”
One of his greatest accomplishments, as if holding six MOSs were not enough, was being awarded the Manchu buckle. The buckle is awarded to participants who complete a 25-mile ruck march. The buckle and march challenge occured when he was on active duty in South Korea. When time came for Guidice to transfer units, he wasn’t able to wear the prestigious award with his uniform, but he cherishes the memory and hard work it took to earn.
“You have to be willing to accept change. If you can accept change, you will have a better and fruitful life,” said Guidice. “It’s about teamwork and setting goals for yourself and accomplishing what you had set out to do, together.”
Guidice’s unit participated in Hawaii’s exercise Vigilant Guard/Makani Pahili 2015. His unit conducted search and rescue training on collapsed structures. They were called upon to react to injured role players in different scenarios. Guidice relied on his vast military experience to succeed in the training events.
This year will make 16 years in the military for Staff Sgt. Guidice. While he looks forward to retiring from the military, he doesn’t plan to stop self-improvement.
“I’m not going to sit here and tell you I’m not going to progress, but I have four years until I am eligible to retire,” said Guidice. “I’m not sure what direction I want to venture toward. I might go into the administrative, supply or be a cook.”
“I have a beautiful wife, family and I am happy with my current job with the 330th MP Company,” said Guidice.
