FORT HOOD, Texas – “It’s a rear position, it only exist in the 10 Combat Aviation Brigades.” Said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Richard Knowlton, incoming command chief warrant officer (CCWO) for 1st Air Cavalry Brigade.
The same way a unit has a command sergeant major, a senior enlisted adviser or a first sergeant an aviation unit should have a command chief warrant to sit as the senior adviser to the warrant officers throughout the brigade.
Chief Warrant Officer DeGolyer was handpicked by the former 1st Air Cavalry brigade commander, Col. Mendenhall in June 2013. Chief DeGolyer would be the first command chief warrant officer to sit at the side of the commander and Sergeant major, in other words a deputy. He’d serve as a mentor to the junior warrant officers within the brigade, he took on the challenge and made it his own, with no prior guidance to follow, and he personalized the position by making sure that he met by-weekly with all warrant officers, they met for breakfast once a month, this helped them grow as a team, they now know each other’s names and titles and were no longer co-workers, they became colleagues, teammates.
“This is such an intricate seat that the Department of the Army (DA) has made it an official position.” Said Knowlton. A board is held to select the next command chief warrant officer to fill the assignment to any of the 10 Combat Aviation Brigade.
“I’m honored to be the one to Chief Warrant Officer 5 DeGolyer sat on the board in which I was selected to be the next CCWO for the 1st Air Cav.”
