CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines with Headquarters Regiment, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, participated in a Command Post Exercise at Landing Zone Swan aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 2, 2015. This training was designed to exercise the command and control capabilities of the regiment in a deployed environment.

Marines at the CPX set up a training environment acting as a forward deployed command post testing the logistical readiness of the unit and allowing commanders to evaluate the capabilities of the regiment.

“The training increases unit readiness and when we increase readiness we increase the lethality and capabilities of the Marine Corps as a whole,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Maston, a material readiness officer with Headquarters Regiment.

The CPX refreshed the unit’s planning processes and tied into the Corps’ expeditionary roots of being able to deploy at a moment’s notice into an environment where self-sustainability is critical, explained Maston.

The Marines understand that communication skills, teamwork and unit cohesion are what make working in a tactical environment like this possible. Lance Cpl. Jordan Donaldson, a food service specialist with the Regiment believes this training is a test to see what Marines can accomplish in a stressful situation.

“We’re all working together to be a deployable force of readiness; teamwork is a must,” Donaldson said.

During the exercise, the command staged an accountability drill. The command then activated personnel and weapons accountability for all within the post. This was all due to a simulated missing Marine.

“They want to teach us what to do so that when we are faced with these situations we can handle everything properly,” Donaldson said.

Some things are not necessarily considered when in garrison but become very important while we are out in the field, explained Maston. “This training gives us time to refine our procedures and figure out lanes of responsibility and authority.”
