JERICHO, VT. - The Services Flight of the Vermont Air National Guard made the most of a rare training opportunity, accompanying the Security Forces Squadron to the Camp Ethan Allen Training Site to provide meals during a week of training exercises.

According to Master Sgt. Chris DiAngelo, a services supervisor, while the security forces members were completing their annual firearms qualification the services staff were breaking in the newly renovated dining facilities at Ethan Allen, the Cram Dining Facility. The services team not only prepared a full menu for three meals each day, they also handled all the preparation, cooking, serving and cleaning for each meal, often working 16-hour days in order to complete their tasks and maintain the facilities.

During a typical drill weekend at the VTANG, said DiAngelo, the services staff works with civilian personnel to provide meals to the base. This is done to accommodate the members of the Wing who visit the dining hall each drill. The time required to run the dining facilities would limit what training they would be able to conduct if they were to do so alone. Working with the civilian staff the services staff are able to provide meals during drill so they can focus on trainings and mission readiness operations.

“Our team worked extremely well,” said Senior Airman Shauna Hill, a services technician. “We were given the option of splitting shifts, but we decided not to; we’re all here together and we’re going to stick together until the mission is done. It made for long days but it was absolutely worth it. The security forces crew was so happy that we were there and seeing smiles on everyone’s faces was great.”

Running a dining facility is only one of their core areas of responsibility. Services also handles lodging and billeting, fitness and recreation, and provides mortuary support. Utilizing the Cram Dining Facility, the services team members were able to complete several of their own annual training requirements, allowing them to focus on other trainings during future drills.

“This was a great opportunity for us to go and get more hands on experience,” said DiAngelo. “We don’t often get the chance to go outside the Wing and get additional training so it made for a fantastic learning opportunity. It was also a huge benefit for our younger staff members who haven’t had the chance before.”
