    Story by Capt. Fernando Ochoa

    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

FORT MCCOY, Wis. - Brig. Gen. David E. Elwell, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command commanding general, traveled to Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, to visit Col. Amy M. Taitano, 650th Regional Support Group commander, and Col. Toni Glover, incoming 650th RSG commander, during the Combat Support Training Exercise June 13.

The CSTX is a multi-component, joint, integrated training event that is conducted over six forward operating bases and will serve more than 4,000 Soldiers from U.S. Army Reserve units from around the country.

Elwell’s intent was to see the progress of the 650th RSG, since they were the overseers of the exercise. Taitano served as the governor of all the FOBs, that included FOB Independence, FOB Justice, FOB Big Sandy Lake, FOB Freedom, FOB Patriot and FOB Liberty.

After visiting the overlay of the exercise, Elwell stopped at the governor’s headquarters and met with some of the 650th RSG Soldiers. With a down-to-earth approach and a unique sense of humor, he reinforced his command messages.

“I appreciate all the hard work you have done here and remember we’re not just playing in the woods at Fort McCoy,” said Elwell. “I believe that our job as reservist is to always be ready to deploy, so keep your skills sharpened.”

Elwell toured the Governor’s Cell and met with each section, asking questions and learning what issues could be addressed so improvements could be made in future exercises.

Elwell understands that the 650th RSG is designed to provide mission command for combat support and combat service support units, and has a joint capability that allows the Army to better manage the flow of logistics into the area of operations.

Therefore, the CSTX exercise puts Soldiers in an environment where these capabilities can be taught and enforced, but more than that this exercise is designed to train the Soldiers for crisis management.

Elwell is a seasoned veteran and a master motivator. In his remarks to the troops, he emphasized what was happening in the world.

“There is a lot going on in the world today and we have to be ready. Our allies are ready to move, but the truth is that they want us with them,” said Elwell. “When bad things happen in the world there is one entity that can stop it and that is the U.S. Army ... and, that is us!”

This CSTX exercise was a success. Hundreds of young Soldiers got their feet wet, hundreds more sharpened their skills and the U.S. Army Reserve stayed strong and ready to answer the call.
