CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Engines revved and roared to life. Motorcycles and their riders lined up, ready to experience the freedom of the open road.

More than 300 Marines, sailors and civilians took part in the II Marine Expeditionary Force motorcycle safety ride across Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, Surf City and Burgaw, North Carolina, June 5.

The purpose of the ride was to promote motorcycle safety and camaraderie while giving experienced riders within II MEF the opportunity to share their knowledge with the less experienced.

“Driving a motorcycle can be a risky endeavor,” said Miles Bowman, the motorcycle program manager for Camp Lejeune. “The more prepared and finely tuned we can have our equipment, our skills and our physical readiness, the greater our chances of survival. Just like in any risky endeavor, whether deployed or here at home, it is necessary to prepare, train and execute the event with great care.”

Kickstands went up shortly after 10:00 a.m. and the riders left Camp Lejeune in a single, mass procession with a police escort on the way to their first stop, New River Harley-Davidson. They split into smaller groups to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the area and meet with local businesses that sponsored the events.

The route, a total of 87 miles, also took the riders to Rick’s Restaurant & Sports Bar, Camino Real Mexican Restaurant and Holland’s Shelter Creek Restaurant before ending at Lejeune Motorsports.

While the event offered a good time to those who participated, safety stood as the most important aspect and the purpose of the ride.

“If you make a mistake on the road you could die,” said Sgt. Maj. Bryan Zickefoose, the sergeant major of II MEF. “You’ve got to understand the roads, you’ve got to be safe and you’ve got to be smart. We train our riders to ride properly and bring them back safely. Ideally, if we bring our riders back safely we’ll have more Marines to fight the fight.”
