FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq – Community leaders of Hawr Rajab and Adwaniyah celebrated the linking of their communities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of a bridge culvert between both regions Feb. 22.

Earlier in the day, another key canal crossing in Adwaniyah also opened along the same route.
The culvert projects began in mid-January and were necessary to repair the canal crossings which had been damaged by improvised explosive devices placed by insurgents.

In attendance were Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Troops A and B of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th BCT, 3rd Inf. Div., currently attached to 2nd BCT, 3rd Inf. Div., representatives of women's councils in both areas and Malek Asaed Hussein, president of the Rashid District Council safety committee.

The projects were funded through the 2nd BCT, 3rd Inf. Div. Commander's Emergency Response Program funds, said 1st Lt. Nicholas Turner, embedded Provincial Reconstruction Team road project manager.

Turner, from Laurel, Md., said a civil affairs team assigned to the 6-8th Cav. Regt. assessed the damaged canal crossings.

The communities of Hawr Rajab and Adwaniyah share a turbulent past; they were both rife with insurgent activity prior to the arrival of coalition forces and the establishment of the Sons of Iraq.

Both communities now host Iraqi army units who share in the responsibility of keeping the areas secure to advance construction and infrastructure repair projects.

Turner said thanks to increased safety, residents of both farming communities have the freedom they need to travel without threat. The rebuilt canal crossings are another example of the success spreading throughout the region.
