MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Team Army ran into a roadblock falling to the Marines 52-30 in wheelchair basketball at the 2015 DoD Warrior Games. Today’s games determine seeding for the final tournament. The competition at Marine Corps Base Quantico was held on June 20.
The DoD Warrior Games, June 19-28, is an adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured service members and Veterans. Approximately 250 athletes, representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Special Operations Command, and the British Armed Forces are competing in archery, cycling, track and field, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, and wheelchair basketball.
Although Team Army jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Marines responded with a pressing, full-court defense that led to nine first half Team Army turnovers.
The pressure from the Marines led to a number of fast breaks and open shots for them.
Leading scorers for Team Army were Spc. Terry Cartwright, Warrior Transition Unit, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, with 11 points and veteran Spc. Dustin Barr, Jamesville, North Carolina, with 9.
Team Army has three games yet to play on Saturday.
Wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans qualified for the 2015 DoD Warrior Games by participating in structured camps, clinics, trials, and daily adaptive sports activities that were executed nationwide with support from the DoD Office of Warrior Care Policy Military Adaptive Sports Program.
