TAYORSVILLE, N.C. – The North Carolina National Guard and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety held a Military and Veterans Hiring event at the National Guard armory here May 13, 2015.

The focus of this hiring event was to fill correctional officer vacancies throughout the state with highly-trained former and current service members.

“Veterans possess the qualities that benefit our agency: Self-discipline, maturity and commitment to service,” said Zachary Kendall, a Career Program manager with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Prisons Administrative Services. “We are grateful for their service to this country. We’re pleased that they would now transition to serving the citizens of North Carolina by choosing a career in corrections.”

Similar hiring events have been conducted throughout the state at various National Guard armories and other military facilities assisting service members transiting out of the military and those currently serving in the Guard and military Reserve.

“We feel that veterans are some of the most highly-trained individuals in the country,” said Melissa Werner, the Strategic Talent Acquisition manager for the North Carolina Governor’s Office. “They know what it means to be dedicated to their jobs, and that’s the type of people that we want to work for us.”

To assist with the correctional officer training requirements, DPS has begun an agreement with North Carolina military installations to conduct Correctional Officer Training at their installation prior to the service members transiting to the civilian work force. This program will allow the former service members to have a seamless transition into the work force, as well as provides DPS and the citizens of North Carolina a highly-trained correctional officer ready to conduct his duties.

Information about future hiring events can be found by going to the NCNG’s Education and Employment Center website, www.ncngeec.com, as well as the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources website, www.oshr.nc.gov.
