FORT DOUGLAS, Utah — Friends, families and Soldiers gathered on the Fort Douglas parade field to witness the passing of command.
Brig. Gen. Daniel J. Dire took command of the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support) from Maj. Gen. Craig A. Bugno during a ceremony June 21.
"We will continue our mission to provide trained and ready soldiers and units to support the call of our nation," Dire said.
Dire joins the 807th following his tenure as the deputy commanding general of operations for the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support) in Forrest Park, Georgia. Dire has served multiple tours with the 807th. His last assignment with the 807th he served as a deputy commanding general. Currently Dire is a clinical professor in the department of pediatrics and emergency medicine at the University of Texas Heath Science Center in San Antonio. His area of special interest is in disaster medicine with an emphasis in terrorist bombings and bioterrorism.
During the ceremony, outgoing commander, Bugno, passed the command colors to Maj. Gen. David Conboy, the deputy commanding general of operations for the United States Army Reserve Command, who in turn handed the division colors to Dire, officially signifying the start of Dire's command.
“Under [Maj.] Gen. Bugno's command the 807th has advanced in all areas, with the great work of the soldiers here and help us to remain an operational reserve in todays complex global security environment,” said Conboy.
"I would like to thank all of the Soldiers who have supported me in my career," Dire said to the Soldiers gathered on the field. "I would have not been successful in any of my previous assignments if I hadn't been surrounded by many great and outstanding soldiers that made me look better than I actually was."
This is Bugno's last assignment. He's retiring from the army and also earned the Distinguished Service Medal for 34 years of service to his country.
“As I leave, we are well positioned to benefit from the leadership of [Brig.] Gen. Dan Dire,” said Bugno. “who will find ways to thrive in this resource strained environment, and will continue to give tremendous value to the nation that organizations like the 807th provide. So I say farewell, mission first, never quit, Army strong.”
