MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – The 2015 DoD Warrior Games archery competition took place at Marine Corps Base Quantico June 22, resulting in two gold medals for Team Army.

Each branch of service - Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Special Operations Command and the British Armed Forces fielded two teams; one to compete with compound bows and the other with recurve bows.

Each team is comprised of three archers who compete to shoot six arrows in two minutes on the same shooting line. Team members, standing just inches apart, must work together to achieve the highest score after three rounds.

U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Colten Harms credits communication with his team members, Spc. Chasity Kuczer and Veteran Capt. Frank Barroqueiro, for their first place win.

“Communication is the key to our success,” said Harms. “We have one person calling the time so we stay focused and one spotting, helping to guide in the next arrow.”

The team’s communication method has been fine-tuned over time. “We work on team shooting at the end of every practice,” said Harms. “It is absolutely why we won.”

U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Sydney Davis, a member of the Army recurve team was nervous going into the event.

“It was my first competition, and I’m so thankful for my teammates [Veterans Billy Meeks and Sean Hook] who didn’t let me get inside of my head, “ said Davis. “They kept me calm.”

Davis said as she stood out there with her teammates, she blocked everything else out. “It was just me and them, nothing else mattered.”

Like many of the athletes, Davis says archery has been helpful in her recovery and she is thankful for the relationships she has built with her teammates.

“We practice together and look out for each other,” said Davis. “We really aren’t just friends anymore, we are family, and that is a wonderful feeling.”

The 2015 DoD Warrior Games, which continue through June 28, is an adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured service members and Veterans. Approximately 250 athletes, representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Special Operations Command and the British Armed Forces are competing in archery, cycling, track & field, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming and wheelchair basketball.
