CINCU, Romania – The 2nd NATO Signal Battalion (2NSB) has successfully coordinated seamless communications during the forward move of a Joint Task Force headquarters from Naples, Italy to Cincu, Romania.

Allied Joint Force Command Naples has deployed to Romania for two weeks as part of Exercise Trident Joust 2015. The purpose of the exercise is to train members of the NATO Response Force to operate and demonstrate full functional capability in a deployed setting.

Communication, an integral part of operations, has remained seamless as a result of the 2NSB efforts that included the transporting and connecting of equipment such as two 2.4-meter satellite ground terminals connected by fiber optics to servers, DMD-20 satellite modems and hundreds of phones and computers.

"It’s a very complex system,” said U.S. Navy Chief Electronics Technician Jeffery Drew. "These aren’t simple phone and computer lines. Within the system are the layers of security you would expect from a multinational, military organization. With this equipment, we [2NSB] can bring all our communication systems from the NATO complex in Naples into this remote field outpost. We can connect our Trident Joust headquarters users with anyone, anywhere in the world.”

Canadian army Lt. Gen. D. Michael Day, commanding officer of Exercise Trident Joust 15 said "I am extremely pleased with what 2NSB has been able to accomplish.” He added, "This important NATO exercise is designed to test NATO’s ability and agility while maintaining communications throughout.”

Trident Joust 15 is also a part of a larger series of exercises referred to as Allied Shield. As with all NATO exercises, the exercises in this series are defensive in nature and are part of NATO’s assurance measures. The activities will focus on enhancing interoperability, readiness and responsiveness among Allied and partner nations. The exercise will conclude on June 28, 2015.
