CROATIA - Motivation comes in variety of ways, some find it with a book, some find it at the gym and some find it with the inspirational words and actions of another.
For Spc. Alyssa Bier, her dedication and drive to be a part of the Minnesota National Guard’s 851st Vertical Engineering Company came with the words and actions of a particular first lieutenant.
“Up until when I joined, the military members in my family were all men,” said Spc. Bier.
Recently, Bier traveled to Croatia with her unit as a part of the Minnesota State Partnership Program to help rebuild a community center. She is a military trained carpentry/masonry specialist and loves what she does.
“I enjoy working with my hands and helping leave something that makes a lasting impact,” said Spc. Bier, a native of St. Cloud.
Being in the unit can be hard work, but everyone gets along well. This is something that has really motivated Bier to recently re-enlist.
“Being apart of the unit is like being apart of a family, we get along like siblings,” said Spc. Bier.
Spc. Bier is a woman in the predominantly male unit, but that doesn’t stop her from putting her best foot forward.
“She has a good work ethic,” said Staff Sgt. Melrose, supply sergeant for the 851st Vertical Engineer Company “She always comes to drill and has a good attitude about what she has to do.”
The US European Command partnered with the US Embassy in Zagreb to help make the project possible. Spc. Bier and the rest of her unit are scheduled to be done with the project and back in Minnesota around mid-July.
