CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Lieutenant Col. Peter J. Lang II was awarded the Bronze Star during a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., June 29, 2015.
The Bronze Star Medal is an individual military award of the U.S. armed forces that may be awarded for acts of heroism, merit or meritorious service in a combat zone.
Lang is being recognized for performing his duties with meritorious service in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as officer in charge, Georgia Deployment Program, International Security Assistance Force-Rotation 14, and mentor to the 51st Georgian Light Infantry Battalion Commander from January 21, 2014, to April 13, 2015, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Lieutenant Gen. David H. Berger, the commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force, said Lang was able to persuade, train, coach and lead his troops in a hazardous area by setting the personal example.
Lang had many responsibilities that led him to direct and supervise the planning, coordination and execution of more than 400 combat patrols and 49 deliberate named operations within Parwan Province, Afghanistan. During which, resulted in the capture or termination of nine named objectives and reduction of indirect fire on Bagram Air Field by half.
He was very modest in receiving the award, giving credit to those under his command during the deployment.
“The real execution of the mission was done by the 54 Marines supporting the 755 man battalion in an austere combat environment,” said Lang. “They did more than 100 combat patrols and it didn’t matter if it was rain, snow or shine.”
Aside from leading combat operations, Lang oversaw the execution and completion of 45 humanitarian projects valued at more than $1.3 million, and oversaw the development of a tactical training plan for Afghan Military Police Guard Command.
"Lieutenant Col. Lang's distinctive contributions, unrelenting perseverance, and steadfast devotion to duty, reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and United States Naval Services," said Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, Jr., commanding officer for Marine Forces Central Command.
