BAGHDAD – A suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded in the Muthan Zayuna neighborhood in the eastern Baghdad District of Rusafa, March 3, killing two Iraqi army soldiers, and wounding two IA soldiers and three civilians.

Soldiers identified and prevented the suicide bomber from reaching its intended target at approximately 7:30 a.m. On-scene IA commanders report the target was likely the IA headquarters in the Rusafa.

"A minibus laden with explosives was stopped by the heroic actions of several IA soldiers manning a checkpoint in Rusafa," said Col. Allen Batschelet, MND-B Chief of Staff. "Without a doubt, had the suicide bomber reached his target, more lives would have been lost. The Iraqi security forces are proving themselves capable of protecting the Iraqi people and are daily showing their heroism against a common enemy."

This latest heroic effort by Iraqi security forces to protect innocent Iraqi lives comes on the heels of yesterday's selfless sacrifice by an off-duty Ministry of Interior commando who was killed while attempting to stop terrorists from firing Katyusha rockets from the Qadisiya neighborhood in the east Mansour District of Baghdad.

An Iraqi army patrol arrived soon after and drove off the terrorists confiscating the rocket rails and documents calling for attacks against the Abna al-Iraq, or Sons of Iraq.
