BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – On July 4, 2015, many deployed service members in Afghanistan were able to enjoy some pizza courtesy of an organization called Pizza 4 Patriots and contributors across the U.S.
“Pizza 4 Patriots is a nonprofit organization that started in 2008 by retired Air Force Master Sgt. Mark Evans,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ronald Burwell, the senior food adviser for the 1st Armored Division Resolute Support Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary). “Throughout the years the Pizza 4 Patriots project has been fortunate to receive donations, ranging from financial to products and services from individuals, families, corporations and other organizations, all wanting to show their support and appreciation to service member for their sacrifice and bravery.”
This Independence Day the organization did what it could to fulfill its goal sending more than 4,500 pizzas or more than 34,000 slices to distribute throughout Afghanistan.
The 1st Armored Division RSSB ensured that those pizzas were transported to other locations as needed so the Soldiers there could eat their own slices. However, feeding the deployed is not the only goal of the organization.
“The project supports not only service members deployed across the globe but also wounded warriors. The vision and goal of Pizza 4 Patriots is to provide all service members a slice of America’s favorite food for the Super Bowl and July 4th.”
