MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Warriors pulled, flipped and ran to cross the finish line during the biannual Spartan Cup hosted by Marine Communication Squadron 28 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., July 10.
Teams of Marines with the squadron competed in events such as tug-of-war, a stretcher run and a Humvee pull during a field day event marking the official completion of the Spartan Cup.
“This is the third time the squadron has held this event,” said Capt. Daniel Coy, the Spartan Cup coordinator with MWCS-28. “The Spartan Cup is made up of three categories testing the individual companies overall physical and combat readiness as well as fidelity standards within the squadron followed by a field day competition.”
More than 300 Marines gathered at the field by MWCS-28 for the Spartan Cup with approximately 145 Marines per company.
Each individual company maintains a record of each Marine's readiness scores based on Physical Fitness Tests, Combat Fitness Tests, annual marksmanship qualifications, Professional Military Education, family involvement, etc. These scores are then submitted along with their performance report at the field day event.
According to Coy, Headquarters and Service Company was the overall winner of the Spartan Cup followed Bravo Company as runner-up.
“Our goal is to improve our unit cohesion and motivate our Marines by showing them that readiness is a tangible object to receive,” explained Coy. “These categories all have respective trophies that are presented to the company who wins that category. An overall winner of the Spartan Cup will receive the Spartan Cup trophy until the next cup dictates the succeeding champion.”
According to Lance Cpl. Ryan McKinney, a multi-channel equipment repairer with the unit, the Marines are made self-aware that their overall readiness affects the company’s scores towards the cup. The pride they showcase for their companies reflects on their drive to improve themselves to contribute to the victory of the teams.
“The intent is to encourage the highest-degree of combat readiness in a broad range of categories, in order to achieve balanced excellence, promote esprit de corps, and cultivate a competitive spirit across the squadron,” explained Coy. “Additionally, these events strengthen the development of small unit leaders and organizational pride.”
The Marines are eager to participate in the event and look forward to the field day competitions and the overall winner of the Spartan Cup announcement. Companies have already started preparing for the next cup in December of this year, said Coy.
“It gives Marines a change of pace from the work they complete on a daily basis,” said McKinney. “The events are open to volunteers and support the positive competitiveness Marines have through the Cup.”
MWSS-28’s Marines have held the Spartan Cup as a tradition and will continue to incorporate it as one of the squadron’s trademarks. Marines will be pushed to their limits as they strive to improve themselves and their companies to achieve a common squadron readiness goal, said McKinney.
