VOLK FIELD, Wis. – As the K Loader approached the rear cargo door of the C-130 aircraft the Airlift Control Flight waited to unload the plane. Two hundred-plus degree exhaust temperatures and direct sunlight made the task uncomfortable; however the crew was motivated to unload equipment in preparation for the annual Patriot exercise held here July 21-23.

“This is a great opportunity,” said Lt. Col. Joelee Sessions of the 172nd Airlift Control Flight, Jackson, Miss. “This whole team gets to broaden their horizons and do things they wouldn’t normally be able to do in their normal job.”

The team, consisting of airmen from the Mississippi and Michigan Air National Guard, was tasked with unloading aeromedical evacuation equipment used to train personnel responding to mass casualty scenarios. When an aircraft calls with specific requirements the ALCF is responsible for the loading or unloading of the aircraft, making sure it happens safely and as quickly as possible. In total the crew was responsible for unloading seven aircraft today.

While some members assisted with the unloading of the plane, others were assigned different duties.

“Today I was tasked with marshaling the aircraft,” said Tech. Sgt. Jody Walker, weather forecaster with the 172nd. “Our marshals are also responsible with marking off the runway to ensure the aircraft can get unloaded quickly and return home.”

Patriot focuses on increasing the understanding of coordination with local, state and federal organizations. It is designed to provide total force realistic Domestic Operations or DOMOPS training by providing a foundation that allows units to define their unique requirements and build them into the overall exercise scenario. Patriot focuses on increasing the understanding of coordination, policies, and procedures required in conducting a Joint Inter-Agency domestic response.

“Everyone who leaves this exercise will be at the top of their game for responding to a natural disaster,” said Sessions.
