SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Workhorse Soldiers of the 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade volunteered to help out by painting several classrooms and common areas at Myers Middle School July 17.
According to Capt. Kevin Joyce, Headquarters Support Company, 603rd ASB it was discovered that several classrooms were in need of some fresh paint, so keeping true to their name and motto the “Workhorse” Battalion did not deny the mission.
“I think it’s great to be able to get some of our Soldiers out into the community to help out,” Joyce said. “Our leadership and Soldiers were more than ready to lend a helping hand and I know the school really appreciates it.”
Myers Middle School Principal Ericka Washington was extremely grateful the Soldiers painted 10 classrooms and some common areas.
“We’re in the process of making Myers Middle School awesome, so we’re currently going through a re-design,” Washington said. “This year we are starting what we call micro-societies, so students will be running a mini city. For the students to come in and see the fresh paint on the walls along with what we are doing to the school is exciting.”
Washington said the paint would go a long way to helping the students have a sense of pride in their school. She said it also meant something else.
“It shows us that the community does care about us,” Washington continued. “When I came in this morning and saw so many cars here I was overwhelmed with how much support we had. It’s exciting, I’m excited.”
Washington said the Soldiers took initiative and pointed out some tables that had graffiti on them and painted them as well.
One of the Soldiers who helped paint was Sgt. Wesley Jameson, HSC, 603rd ASB. Wesley was the noncommissioned officer in charge of the painting operation. Jameson said that everyone who came to help out did so on a voluntary basis. He said the effort was one of true selfless service to the community.
“This is just one way we can give back to our community and show who we really are as Soldiers,” Jameson said.
Laura Maes is one of the assistant principals at Myers Middle School. She talked about what kind of an effect a small gesture such as painting can do to help.
“This has a huge impact on how we are perceived in the community. When both the parents and children come in and see a nice clean sparkling school, it’s a fantastic way to start the school year,” Maes said. “This doesn’t just affect the students, it affects the teachers as well. They are going to be excited that somebody took the time over the summer to beautify their classrooms.”
