FORT STEWART, Ga. - Soldiers from throughout Fort Stewart and the 3rd Infantry Division gathered to celebrate the 97th birthday of the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Cohort here at Club Stewart, July 17.
The birthday of the warrant officer cohort in the U.S. Army hails back to their start on July 9, 1918.
When the Army created the warrant officer corps, its members were touted as subject matter experts in their particular fields.
To this day they are still hailed as the subject-matter experts, with warrant officers within 40 different branches of the Army. The fields these experts hold positions in range from aviation and combat arms, to logistics and everything in between.
The ceremony consisted of three speakers. Brig. Gen. Jim Blackburn, commander, Task Force Marne, 3rd Infantry Division; Chief Warrant Officer 5 George Kelly, command chief warrant officer, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade; and Chief Warrant Officer 5 David Williams, Army Staff Senior Warrant Officer.
After their respective speeches a cake was cut in celebration and many of those in attendance participated in an impromptu social hour.
During the social hour, Williams spoke about what stuck out to him in the last year of the Warrant Officer Cohorts history.
“Although it wasn’t intentional…I’ll always remember the 97th birthday being the year we [implemented] Warrant Officer 2025,” said Williams.
Warrant Officer 2025 is a new program, which is designed to provide a more refined way of assessing development and managing warrant officers within the ranks.
