MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - The 2015 Intramural Soccer League concluded July 16, 2015, with a championship game at Pop Warner Field aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii ending with Combat Logistics Battalion 3 defeating Marine Aircraft Group 24 in a closely contested game, 6-5.
From the opening whistle, the game heated up with two goals scored by CLB-3. MAG-24 responded with two goals, but the game arrived at halftime with CLB-3 in the lead, 4-2.
Bryant Payan, a center midfielder, forward and high-scorer for CLB-3, was assured of his team’s abilities and was determined to bring home the gold.
“I was feeling confident, but I knew we couldn't stop putting out,” Payan said. “We've been down before and came back, so I knew (MAG-24) had the same capability.”
“Six to five is a very high score (for a) championship game,” Payan said. “It goes to show that both teams (worked hard). Fortunately for us, we kept our intensity (throughout) the game. Although we were down at some point, we maintained our focus on what we came out to do, and that was to win.”
Payan said their biggest struggle was attendance at practice, leaving an uncertain starting lineup each game. But playing soccer together enhanced unit morale and made their relationships stronger on and off the field.
“My relationship with my teammates is good,” Payan said. “Most of us have played together before so we have a good bond. It felt great to have the team come together (for) one last season before most of us (leave Hawaii).”
Fred Weihmiller, a referee during the championship game, said he was proud of the performances of both teams. He looks at refereeing as a way to give back to the service members.
“I enjoy the opportunity to give the women and men on base the opportunity to have a change of pace,” Weihmiller said. “They give so much to us, and it seems only right to pay it forward.”
The CLB-3 team won the championship in 2013, but was unable to compete last season due to deployment.
The current intramural sport season is flag football, which began July 21, 2015. Those who are interested in participating in intramural sports can contact Christina Rizzello, the intramural coordinator for MCB Hawaii Semper Fit, at 254-7591.
