ROSEAU, Dominica- Government and non-government officials, plus other special guests, officially kicked off Operation Continuing Promise 2015 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau, Dominica on July 28, 2015.
Operation Continuing Promise is a mission in which the United States military works with host nations to provide humanitarian assistance and execute civil-military operations alongside various partner nations within the Caribbean and Central and South America.
This is the first time that Operation Continuing Promise will work with Dominica to provide the host nation with a large array of health care, including optometry, pediatrics and surgery.
“We look forward to the incredible work that we’re going to do here over the next week in Dominica,” said U.S. Navy Captain Sam Hancock, CP-15 mission commander. “During our mission stop here in Roseau and other areas around the island, we will work alongside our Dominican partners to care for patients at both the Dominica Grammar School here in Roseau and the Roosevelt Douglas Primary School in Portsmouth.”
Service members with CP-15 estimated they could possibly see up to 600 patients per day at each medical site. Over 100 surgeries will also be performed aboard U.S. Navy Ship Comfort (T-AH-20) during the nine days the ship will stay in Dominica.
The ship has roughly 1,000 beds for patients and 12 operating rooms, two of which will function 24/7 during the mission here.
“Your presence here attests to our friendship,” said Roosevelt Skerrit, prime minister of Dominica. “It is my wish that the health volunteers from your team will form firm and lasting friendships with many of our own professionals with whom they will be cooperating during this mission.”
Health professionals from both countries will have the opportunity to talk to one another during subject matter exchanges; however, the U.S. will be providing more than just medical assistance during its short time on the island.
Service members from USNS Comfort will show Dominica how much they have to offer by also working at an engineering site, offering veterinary care and getting to know the local population through community relations events.
“When the [U.S. government] asked whether or not we would accept the presence of the USNS Comfort here in Dominica, my response was a resounding yes,” said Skerrit.
