SOUTHWEST ASIA – The Portuguese and Spanish chiefs of defense staff visited Iraq July 22.
Gen. Artur Neves Pina Monteiro (Portugal) and Adm. Fernando García Sánchez (Spain), accompanied by other senior leaders, visited Iraq to meet with Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve coalition trainers and get a first-hand look at the training led by their respective forces here.
After landing in Baghdad, the delegation visited Spanish Special Forces soldiers and met with Brig. James Learmont (United Kingdom), deputy commanding general of the Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command – Iraq, as well as the incoming and outgoing commanders of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force.
During the visit, the delegation toured the Besmaya Range Complex in Iraq, a training area where Spanish, Portuguese and American Soldiers train and equip Iraqi security forces.
Both chiefs met with soldiers from each contingent and observed the training at the Iraqi army explosive ordnance disposal school, where engineers are trained in counter improvised explosive device warfare.
Before the delegation left, the camp held a parade in the Plaza de España that included the lowering of the Portuguese and Spanish flags and a ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen.
