FORT STEWART, Ga. -- The Continental Congress established chaplains as an integral part of the Continental Army in July of 1775.
In celebration of the creation of the Chaplain Corps, the 3rd Infantry Division Chaplain Corps came together and held a day of fun and fellowship at the Corkan Family Recreation Area, July 31.
The event consisted of a cake cutting, lunch, and slew of fun activities for children and adults alike.
All those in attendance were either part of the 3rd ID’s Chaplain Corps or family members.
“We held this event for two reasons really, One: It’s the chaplain corps’ anniversary, 240 years… that’s a big deal,” said Capt. William Oliver, chaplain, Task Force Marne, 3rd Infantry Division. “Two: Chaplains and Chaplains Assistants are so busy running around providing religious support that lots of times they don’t get a break, especially during the duty hours.”
The call for religious support seems to be thriving in the Army and at Fort Stewart, which keeps the limited personnel extremely busy, which begs a question according to Oliver.
“How do you care for the caregiver?” asked Oliver, “whether its medics or chaplains, those who are in caregiver roles, they need to slow down and take some time to fill up their tanks too, and this is just one of many examples of how we are trying to do that.”
