NEWBERRY, S.C. - The South Carolina Army National Guard, 1050th Transportation Battalion conducted a change of command ceremony at the National Guard Armory in Newberry, South Carolina, Aug. 2, to recognize the outgoing commander, Lt. Col. Brad Marlow, and welcome the incoming commander, Lt. Col. Richard Zeigler III.

Col. David Jenkins, 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade commander, presided over the ceremony and praised Marlow’s service as the battalion commander.

“I would like to thank Brad Marlow,” said Jenkins. “Great and outstanding job…preparing this unit for great success moving forward.”

Jenkins also affirmed his confidence in Zeigler.

“I look forward to working with you as a commander,” added Jenkins. “I look forward to your success.”

Marlow, who has served in many roles within the National Guard, is a decorated veteran, including a Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.

“Remember why you serve, why I serve, why we serve,” said Marlow.

Zeigler enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1989 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1994 through the Palmetto Military Academy Class 45. He is currently employed full-time with the South Carolina Army National Guard as the deputy G-3 and mobilization readiness officer.

The purpose of the change of command ceremony is to pass the command and control of the unit from the previous commander to the new. The passing of the unit colors signifies that the organization is more important that one individual and that even though the commander may change, the organization remains constant and the continuity will remain.

The 1050th Transportation Battalion is a professional unit that has participated in several operations and exercises to include Operation Palmetto Transition and Vigilant Guard and has mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The battalion’s motto is “Agmeninis Victoria,” which is Latin for “Driving Victory.” This motto is exemplified by the Leaders and Soldiers of the 1050th Transportation Battalion.

The ceremony was also used to officially recognize and welcome the 1050th Trans. Bn. to the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade.
