KABUL, Afghanistan - Resolute Support coalition partners gathered at the Maj. Gen. Harold “Harry” Greene Memorial Pavilion Aug. 5 for a plaque dedication and remembrance of the sacrifices of those wounded and killed in an incident at Marshal Fahim National Defense University one year prior.
Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, then-Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan deputy commanding general, was on a site visit at the Kabul facility when he sustained fatal injuries in a shooting by a gunman believed to be an Afghan soldier. Fourteen coalition personnel from Germany, the United Kingdom and United States were wounded in the attack, as well as one Afghan general and one command interpreter.
Donations were coordinated through CSTC-A’s Combined Joint Engineer Directorate to construct a plaque that honored Greene, an engineer, and his contributions to Afghanistan. Identical plaques will be presented to the Pentagon, the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Air Force Civil Engineer Center in San Antonio and the new Afghan Ministry of Defense building near Resolute Support Headquarters. A final plaque will be given to the Greene family.
“Harry loved being here in Afghanistan,” said Maj. Gen. Daniel Hughes, deputy commanding general of CSTC-A and long-time friend of Greene. “He was always talking about the future and what more could be done here. He loved this job. He was excited at the prospect of success for the Afghan people.”
Maj. Gen. Todd Semonite, CSTC-A commanding general, also paid homage to Greene during his remarks at the ceremony.
“Harry was the highest ranking officer killed in combat since Vietnam. However, it’s not his rank that compels us to honor him,” said Semonite. “For 34 years, he dedicated himself to his country and his fellow soldiers. He always immersed himself in the mission, and his time here at CSTC-A was no different.”
Semonite also recognized the men and women who were present during the shooting.
“Lives were forever changed on Aug. 5. Injuries - physical and emotional - were sustained,” said Semonite. “Yet, among the terror and chaos there was no shortage of bravery. Service members and civilians rendered aid in the face of danger. Complete selflessness could be seen as then-ISAF members worked tirelessly to save their fellow comrades, including Harry.”
The names of those wounded and killed during the attack were read and followed by a moment of silence.
After the plaque was unveiled, Resolute Support chaplain Maj. Edward Godshall closed the event with a benediction. A sea of uniforms with fabric from the various coalition nations lined up to view the plaque and leave a unit or national patch in honor of Greene’s sacrifice. They held in their hands the ceremony program that included the following quote from the late general, “Don’t count the days. Make the days count.”
