CAMP ALLEN, NORFOLK, Va. - Thirty Marine Corporals from eight different Marine units graduated from the Headquarters and Service Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, Corporals Course Class 2-15 on July 31, 2015.

The three-week course consisted of instruction in such things as land navigation, sword and guidon manual, and guided discussions about leadership.

The course places emphasis on the fundamentals of leadership and becoming a leader.

Not having many junior Marines in his section, Cpl. Andrew Palacios, a Marine Corps Forces Command G6 data technician, said the course taught him how to be a leader, what being a leader means, and how it affects his subordinates.

Palacios, a Rialto, Calif. native, graduated the course as the honor graduate while also earning his gray belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.

MCMAP wasn’t mandatory for all the Marines in the course, but the instructors offered it to the Marines and about six participated. Another Marine who earned her gray belt is Miami, Fla., native Cpl. Jessika Acosta.

“The biggest takeaway I got was confidence in what you do. Always have confidence even when you’re unsure in a situation,” said Acosta, a Marine Corps Public Affairs Support Element combat correspondent. “Overall, this course taught me not to think of myself, but to think of others first.”

Effect October 1, 2015 corporals looking to pick up sergeant will now have to complete the online course and then the residential course. For the time being, Corporals only have to complete one of the two.

With the changes coming to the promotion system, Sgt. Maj. Adam Moore, the Headquarters and Service Battalion Corporals Course Director, emphasized that Corporals Course isn’t just about getting promoted. It’s about adding tools to your toolbox and being a better Marine and leader.
