LAS VEGAS Nev. – Safety was priority number one for this year's NASCAR event in Las Vegas, Nev., Feb. 29 through March 3, 2008. The Nevada National Guard worked with local and federal agencies to ensure that participants and spectators alike enjoyed the event.

This was the 92nd Civil Support Team's third year of supporting the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"We work closely with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department and other Hazardous Material first responders to support the needs and requests of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway staff," said 2nd Lt. Steve Golladay with the 92nd Civil Support Team who worked the mission in 2007.

"NASCAR is just one of the many prevent, deter and response missions that the Nevada National Guard 92nd CST jointly accomplish with local officials throughout the year," said Detective Douglas Huffmaster from LVMPD.

"That is what the ARMOR concept is all about (All Hazards Regional Multi-agency Operations and Response). The multi agency is part of the fusion concept where the Nevada National Guard CST team comes together with various local and federal agencies.

"We are here as safety and security measures for the event," said Staff Sgt. David Bouse, member of the 92nd CST from the Nevada National Guard. "We survey the areas in and around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, taking readings with our AN/UDR-13 pocket residual radiation units throughout the entire event,' said Bouse. "We monitor for changes in the environment, the continuous readings ensure we have an accurate baseline from which to judge our findings", said Bouse.

Golladay states that it is because of the amount of visitors and media coverage of the NASCAR race it important that the CST plays their part ensuring the security and safety of the event."

Fortunately, this NASCAR event, like the others, went without incident. "The crowds were heavy, especially on Sunday for the big event, but everyone was here just to have a good time and enjoy the race," said Staff Sgt. Joe Sherych, from the 92nd CST.

"The 92nd CST is a great asset," said Huffmaster. He also stated that the National Guard Unit brings expertise, personnel strength and strong leadership to the table.

"The 92nd CST has equipment that we don't have, it allows us to know quickly identify the threat is and how best to deal with it. This is very important to public safety," said Huffmaster. He said that that the faster the teams can respond to any given situation the better they can protect the civilian population.
