FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. – From July 20 - Aug. 4, 2015, Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL) Fire Department conducted firefighting training for 20 Army Reserve firefighters (12M Military Occupational Specialty) of the 467th Engineer Detachment Firefighting, 593rd and the 614th Engineer Battalions and 12 new FHL firefighters during the 2015 Warrior Exercises (WAREX).

“I learned so many new firefighting techniques and instructors were knowledgeable and provided hands-on training. As a firefighter, we get few firefighting training opportunities, but the training taught us a variety of real fire scenarios and an invaluable opportunity to learn,” said, Cpl. Rodney Kennedy of the 467th Engineer Detachment Firefighting based in Des Moines, Iowa.

The FHL Fire Department provides annual firefighting training to 12M Soldiers during all large-scale exercises including Combat Support Training Exercise (CSTX) and WAREX. The firefighting training consists of proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA); wildland/structural/aircraft firefighting; vehicle extrication; cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR); and rope rescue.

The final day culminated with live fire training evolutions which exercised proficiency in the skills taught during the 14 days of arduous training. Firefighters gained a total of 1,773 hours of valuable hands-on training.

“As a commander, this was the best hands-on firefighting training experience, and I recommend other firefighting units to train at Fort Hunter Liggett,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brent T. Vanzuiden, detachment commander of the 467th Engineer Detachment Firefighting.

The FHL Fire Department firefighting training program consists of a dynamic and challenging agenda, which encompassed a wide variety of firefighting principles and life-saving skills and techniques. The firefighting training was a team effort involving 15-20 seasoned FHL firefighters.

“The training exercises were a resounding success,” said Clinton Tolle, FHL training chief. “All the Soldiers who participated in the exercises concluded that return trips to Fort Hunter Liggett in coming years would only enhance training skills and techniques, further benefiting their professional firefighting careers.”
