SAGAMIHARA CITY, Japan – An explosion at the U.S. Army’s Sagami General Depot occurred at about 12:45 a.m. today (Aug. 24).
There are no indications of injuries. The building where the explosion and fire was centered was not a hazardous material storage facility and was used for storing canisters of nitrogen, oxygen, Freon and compressed air. The depot does not store ammunition or radiological materials.
Army officials appreciate the quick response and assistance from their emergency responders and police partners from Sagamihara City. The cause of the explosion and fire in the nearly 9,800 square foot building is under investigation by various military agencies and Sagamihara City fire department officials. Sagami General Depot covers an area of approximately 485 acres and employs about 800 people (500 Japanese and 300 Americans).
