More than 30 Airmen from the Idaho Air National Guard under Mission Commander Capt. Dale Wood, of the 124th Air Support Operations Squadron, departed Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho, to support wildfire containment efforts at the Kaniksu Complex Tower Fire in the Idaho Panhandle and eastern Washington Aug. 26, 2015.
The National Guard volunteers are serving on state active duty orders manning checkpoints to keep residents and travelers from entering evacuated areas. The Airmen come from many work centers within the 124th Fighter Wing and all are taking time away from their families, military and civilian jobs to serve their state mission.
The 124th Fighter Wing commander, Col. Tim Donnellan, addressed the group before their departure.
“Thanks again for being the fantastic guardsmen that you are and standing up and taking care of our state. Be careful, take care of one another, I’m proud of you and look forward to seeing you when you get back.”
The U.S. Forest Service reports that the Tower Fire, along with six smaller fires are scattered across the Idaho Panhandle and Colville National Forests along the lands of the Washington Department of Natural Resources. The Alaska Incident Management Team is managing the fires that are larger than 12,000 acres and 10 percent contained.
