    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Sgt. Maj. Scott Schmitt relinquished his post as the sergeant major of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit to Sergeant Maj. Brett Scheuer during a relief and appointment ceremony aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 14, 2015.

Schmitt served as the unit’s sergeant major starting in May of 2014. During his tour, Schmitt deployed with the unit in support of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response and oversaw the unit’s predeployment training for its deployment to the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility later this fall.

During the ceremony, Col. Robert Fulford, the commanding officer of the 26th MEU, said Schmitt has been instrumental in shaping the unit and his leadership has been the foundation for the unit’s success.

“During his 18 months here, he has built magnificent Marines and units and forged relationships throughout the MAGTF and United States Navy that has set the atmosphere for a successful partnership,” said Fulford. “There is not a finer Marine that I have served with in my 23 years who has embodied the full spectrum of what it means to be a Marine.”

Schmitt said he was honored to have served alongside the Marines within the unit and said he will always remember the relationships he built here. To end his remarks, Schmitt reminded the Marines of their upcoming deployment and provided them with some sage advice.

“Family is not just your blood relations, but the family you have within the MEU,” said Schmitt."It’s about building relationships and continuing to work on them. As a unit, there’s going to be good days and there’s going to be bad days, but in the end it all works out.”

Before coming to the 26th MEU, Scheuer was the regimental sergeant major at 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. Scheuer has also served in sergeant major billets including the battalion sergeant major of 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment in Marjah, Afghanistan and in support of operations in Southern Command and Marine Forcers Southern Command as the Security Cooperation Taskforce, Amphibious SPS-11, Taskforce sergeant major.

During the ceremony, Scheuer said he is looking forward to building upon the legacy Schmitt left behind and is optimistic about the upcoming deployment.

“[Sgt. Maj.] Schmitt is a true professional and I wish him and his family the best,” said Scheuer. “I hope to pick up where he left off and continue to push the rock forward. I know the Marines and sailors have worked hard and are ready for what awaits us in the near future.”
