FORT HOOD, Texas - Baylor University's softball team spent the last week conditioning and team building, but on the last day, they hit the road for some unexpected training.
Arriving here Sept. 12, the Lady Bears met with Soldiers from the 91st Engineer Battalion 'Saber,' 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.
Saber Soldiers took them through an array of military training, including Army Physical Readiness Training, a modified obstacle course, and room-clearing procedures.
The 91st Eng. Bn. hosted a similar event in April with Baylor’s football team. After hearing about the success from both the players and coaches, coach Candice Walls, Baylor’s director of Olympic sports for athletic performance, decided their softball team would benefit from the same type of critical thinking and team-building exercises that the football team went through.
"I thought, ‘Why not do the training for the softball team?’” said Walls. “Why not show these girls something more than themselves, and help them build bonds and get them outside of their Baylor bubble? This also allowed our girls to really see how much they have already bonded, and for the leaders to step forward. All in all, this was a great experience for all of us."
This is the third event in the 91st En. Bn. Saber Excellence program in which Soldiers and players teamed up to train together and build lasting bonds.
The head coach said he feels this opportunity gave his players a different perspective on both teamwork and leadership from the military community, only 45 minutes away.
“We wish we could have every one of America’s youth go through something like this and be around Soldiers,” said Glenn Moore, Baylor softball team head coach. “Basically, being in our backyard, it’s very important to build that relationship. Judging from watching our players interact with the Soldiers, I think this training was well received and benefited our team as a whole.”
From freshmen to seniors, the Baylor softball team enjoyed their time working together and seeing what Soldiers do to train for deployments.
“Coming here and going through the events we went through really gives me a better sense of what our armed forces do, and the kinds of things they’re doing to train,” said Robin Landrith, a senior and catcher for the Baylor softball team. “Just being able to see first-hand and meet people in our Army, it really makes me appreciate everything they do. I had a great time here and hope our team does this again in the future.”
