1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division

FORT HOOD, Texas – Soldiers, leadership, families and friends of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division bid farewell to one senior enlisted advisor and welcomed another during a Change of Responsibility Ceremony at Cooper Field here, Sept. 3.

Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph Cornelison relinquished responsibility to Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Coffey. The 1st Cavalry Division Band and the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Cavalry Detachment supported the ceremony.

Cornelison, who arrived at the brigade in April 2014 from his previous position as the command sergeant major for the 2nd Squadron 38th Cavalry Regiment, will head to Fort Riley, Kansas, where he will serve as the command sergeant major for the 1st Infantry Division.

“To the officers, noncommissioned officers and Soldiers of this brigade, thank you for your hard work and commitment and thank you for doing your jobs to the utmost of your ability,” said Cornelison. “I’m proud to have been a member of your team - thank you for making this assignment an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.”

Cornelison, who entered the Army in 1990, had spent the majority of his career in light infantry and Ranger units before his assignment to the Ironhorse Brigade.

“It has been a fun and exciting ride, and I often get asked by my buddies who are career Rangers and paratroopers what it’s like being assigned to an armored brigade combat team,” said Cornelison. “I tell them my brigade is a powerhouse, a force to be reckoned with, a unit with more firepower and speed of maneuver than they can ever imagine, an element on the battlefield that is capable of decisively ending things.”

The 1 ABCT Commander, Colonel John DiGiambattista, presided over the ceremony.

“Throughout these unique and challenging deployments, Command Sgt. Maj. Cornelison brought valuable insight, experience, and leadership - the same attributes that have led to his selection as a division command sergeant major,” said DiGiambattista. “We wish him nothing but the best as he heads to Fort Riley to be the division command sergeant major of the Big Red One.”

During Cornelison’s time at 1 ABCT, the brigade deployed to Europe twice as part of the brigade’s regional alignment with Europe.

Command Sgt. Major Coffey, who like Cornelison has a background in light infantry, joins the Ironhorse Brigade from his previous assignment as the command sergeant major of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

“Soldiers of the Ironhorse Brigade, both on and off the field, thank you most importantly for relentlessly maintaining readiness in one of the most lethal brigade combat teams in the United States Army and standing ready to answer your nation’s call,” said Coffey. “I am honored and humbled to serve alongside you all in this brigade and this historic division.”

Coffey takes over as the brigade prepares for an October decisive action rotation at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California.
