SILVERDALE, Wash. -- Sailors from various commands throughout the Pacific Northwest received their gold fowled anchors and combination covers for the first time during a chief petty officer pinning ceremony Sept. 16.

"This is the most rewarding experience for me,” said Chief Culinary Specialist Ladonna Tillery, from Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor Trident Galley. “It proves hard work actually pays off."

The Chief pinning ceremony is a unique tradition to the Navy. The chief petty officer pay grade was created April 1, 1893. The ceremony signifies a new position of leadership and responsibility for the Navy.

"During the last six weeks we challenged our selectees physically and mentally,” said Chief Master-at-Arms Michael Reyes, from NBK Security. “We not only trained them but we learned about our brothers and sisters inside and out."

During the ceremony, family members and friends pin on two gold anchors to each newly appointed chief's uniform and the Sailor's sponsor places the combination cover on their heads.

"If it weren’t for our junior Sailors I wouldn’t be where I am,” said Tillery. “Taking care of your Sailors is very important and essential to mission success."

After receiving their combination cover and anchors, each chief is piped through the sideboys to complete the chief petty officer pinning ceremony.

Families, friends, sponsors and shipmates congratulated the newly appointed chiefs on their accomplishment.

The Pacific Northwest advanced more than 100 selectees to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Naval Base Kitsap advanced 12, Naval Station Everett advanced 19, and Naval Air Station Whidbey advanced 76 including aircraft squadrons.
