MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Corpsmen with 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group rush to treat simulated casualties as they take on a battalion field exercise aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 23, 2015. During the training, sailors and Marines were challenged to treat patients and deal with some of the stressors they may see in real-life scenarios.

The Marines and sailors were conducting the exercise to increase unit readiness across the board.

“We are out here learning how to set up a Shock Trauma Platoon as well as receiving patients for triage, as well as treating them,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christina Erickson, a hospital corpsman with the unit. “We are learning how to be able to treat patients, regulate them and use all of our ancillary systems: labs, x-ray’s as well as dental.”

Sailors and Marines teamed up during patrols to conduct convoy operations to transport casualties and achieve mission success.

“It’s a change of pace to work with sailors and support Medical Battalion,” said Sgt. Danielle Riolo, a motor vehicle operator with 2nd Medical Bn. “Also as motor transportation we are getting our requirements as well. We’re able to train out here with vehicle convoy patrols during the day and low light, [conducting] convoy operations.”

Through the chaos, the junior Marines and sailors built confidence in their life-saving skills to gain comfort for real-life scenarios.

“This training ensures that our junior sailors are ready to deploy with or without us,” said Erickson. “We may go as a group or they may be cut down to a group of eight with just an STP, so [we are] making sure our junior sailors are knowledgeable and able to perform by themselves.”

It was a first field exercise with a realistic environment for some of the junior service members participating.

Erikson gave insight on what some of the less experienced sailors might have been thinking during the exercise. “They’re anxious trying to figure out what’s going on, how the Shock Trauma Platoon works, the patient flow, and they are really worried trying to ensure they take care of their patients properly.”

After treating countless notional patients and conducting multiple unit readiness operations, 2nd Medical Battalion is looking to the future with this training, ready to answer the nation’s call.
