    11th Corps Signal Brigade

FORT HOOD, Texas- The everyday jobs and activities of service members involves fast paced and often demanding tasks. In order for these to be successful, it takes the collective work of motivated and dedicated individuals.

Even though it’s a team effort, there are Soldiers that go above and beyond every day and their efforts make them standout.

Spc. Eric D. Fields, Company C, 62nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion was selected as the 11th Signal Brigade’s Thunderbird of the Month for September.

The Chesapeake, Virginia native came into the military in March 2012 as a Satellite Communications Operator-Maintainer, a job that fit what he was looking for.

“It seemed like a challenge,” explained Fields. “And I have always been interested in the information technology field.”

Fields joined the Army for the life experiences and to help himself grow professionally, but he also had bigger goals in mind when he enlisted.

“I would like to finish my BA in Information Technology, attain as many professional certifications as possible and inspire those around me to do the same,” said Fields.

He arrived to 62nd ESB in January 2013 and was originally assigned to Company B, but moved to Company C to assist them during their impending deployment.

During the deployment, Fields was responsible for ensuring a Phoenix terminal and three USC-60A satellite communication terminals were able to provide mission critical communications with other entities.

“Due to his technical proficiency, the communications reliability rate was 98 percent during his tenure,” said Sgt. 1st Class Sean L. Olivo, Company C platoon sergeant, 62nd ESB.

During the deployment Fields had one of his most memorable experiences since he has been in the military.

“While on deployment we had less than six hours to move into a permanent building,” Fields explained. “All personnel pulled together to accomplish this and to see our team work together so seamlessly and for one purpose was inspiring.”

That feeling is one of Fields’ favorite things about being in the Army.

It’s a great feeling when a team comes together to accomplish a goal, said Fields.

After returning from deployment, Fields has continued making a positive impact on his unit and those around him.
His technical expertise has helped his unit during field training and validation exercises.

“He is often sought out by his peers within the company and throughout the battalion for advice and troubleshooting techniques,” said Olivo.

Even though he enjoys helping his peers, it’s the help that his team member Spc. Carlos Lazo, Company C, 62nd ESB, gave him that sticks with him.

“As I came to the unit getting ready for deployment, this Soldier took me under his wing and helped me get ready, [and] then help me through deployment,” explained Fields. “Spc. Lazo did not need to help me and did not know me at all. For him to help me will always leave a lasting impression with me.”

For all that Fields has accomplished since coming to the unit, it is him that is leaving a lasting impression for those around him.

“He is an excellent Soldier and a great signaleer, raved Staff Sgt. Matthew Parsons, Company C section sergeant, 62nd ESB. “He exemplifies the quiet professional.”

Fields plans to continue helping those around him excel and also doing all he can to ensure the unit continues its current track record of success.

After finding his calling as a communicator, the humble signaleer had one piece of advice for his peers.

“Find what you enjoy and do it every day,” said Fields
