MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - The Marines and Sailors of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, invited people from across the globe to come share in the 2015 MCAS Miramar Air Show, Oct. 2 to 4.
This year’s theme for the event was “A Salute to Veterans and Their Families,” in honor of all the service members from past and present and the loved ones that supported them.
“We are very thankful for our veterans,” said Brig. Gen. Edward Banta, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West, and the guest speaker at the opening ceremony. “Whether they have served in conflicts past or in the last 14 years of sustained combat operations, we salute their service and stand on their shoulders. We could not do what we do today without their service in the past.”
Hundreds of thousands of people attended the three-day show which featured multiple military and aerial demonstrations to include a performance by the United States Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, the “Blue Angels,” the U.S. Army’s “Golden Knights” parachute team, and a Marine Air-Ground Task-Force demonstration.
“The MAGTF demonstration is easily my favorite act,” said Col. Jason Woodworth, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar. “It’s an opportunity to see the Marines do what they do on a daily basis. With the helicopters, the jets and the ground guys doing what they do with such precision, it’s hard to beat.”
The show also included multiple civilian acts like the Breitling and Patriot Jet Teams, the Oracle Challenger, the Shockwave Jet Truck and much more.
Although the aerial acrobatics were the highlight of the show, there were plenty of things to see at ground level. Throughout the flightline, spectators could find military and civilian static aircraft and vehicle displays, including many historic aircraft that have been restored and had no problem finding food or merchandise with the surplus of vendors.
“This is really an opportunity for us to put our best foot forward for the community of San Diego and let them see what happens here,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Rocco, commanding general of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. “You see us fly over houses and over San Diego but to actually come to actually bring them on base to show them a little bit of how we operate is a thrill for us.”
On Saturday, after spending the entire day in the sun, guests stuck around as the performers lit up the sky during the “Twilight Show.” Under the darkening sky, some of the day’s favorite acts return to stage ending with a spectacular fireworks display and the crowd pleasing inferno known as the “Great Wall of Fire.”
“The air show serves as our opportunity to thank the city of San Diego and the surrounding area’s for all the support they give to the Marines, Sailors and their families, both at MCAS Miramar as well as other installations here in the greater San Diego area,” said Banta. “I have been to about every place where we have Marines, and I can tell you there is no place like San Diego when it comes to supporting our service members. We absolutely could not do what we do without their support.”
