    3rd Combat Aviation Brigade

HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – Several 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade officers in the rank of major took part in a leadership professional development event which simulated the Battle of Gettysburg to learn the art and science of mission command on Hunter Army Airfield Oct. 1.

The event was a culmination of several LPD events held during the year on the topic of mission command.

Col. John D. Kline, commander, 3rd CAB, attended the event in an observer controller capacity. It was also his last LPD as brigade commander.

“It was a great exercise that is intended to test the skill that have been learned through our study of mission command,” Kline said. “We are fighting the Battle of Gettysburg, and we are seeing how well the leaders understand the limitations that the officers of the time where experiencing.”

The officers were divided into teams representing the Union and Confederate armies to simulate and experience the same conditions and challenges officers of the period faced. Battle plans were drawn out on 1/10,000 scale maps where the officers could visualize troop locations and plan out attack and defense strategies in the conference room at the 3rd CAB.

Maj. John Culpepper, simulations operations officer, 3rd CAB, was the officer in charge of the training.

“This exercise was the culminating exercise of a yearlong study of mission command,” Culpepper said. “It challenged them to think about what orders to give and what are their expectations of their brigade commanders.”

One of the officers participating in the event was Maj. Ryan Kelly, operations officer, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment.

“I think the training is very interesting, it is a different take on mission command and actually exercising the mission orders,” Kelly said. “It is deftly a different take on officer professional development and I really like it.”

With Kline’s change of command scheduled for Oct. 19, he spoke about his team on his last LPD event.

“Everything I do at this stage is bittersweet, whether it is a LPD, a battalion change of command or a last flight, even PT with my sergeant major, all those things are all bittersweet,” Kline said.
