HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas – Harker Heights Elementary School hosted their annual Freedom Walk Friday to honor those who serve and have served.

Five Troopers with 1st Squadron “Tiger,” 3rd Cavalry Regiment attended the event and assisted the faculty in helping the students understand what it means to be free.

To start off the event, the principal, Carolyn Dugger, had all the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students assemble at the flag pole in front of the school, where the students rendered honors during the raising of the flag.

Tiger Squadron’s troopers assisted captain of the flag Zachary Tunget, an elementary student, raise the flag while everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

"Our children are free to pursue their dreams because of the service of our Soldiers to guarantee free and public education for all," said Duggar.

All in attendance had a moment of silence for those who have lost their lives. Afterwards, the students moved back inside to recite the national anthem in front of their classrooms.

The Freedom Walk commenced with the teachers from all grades leading their students around the school, waving flags and donning patriotic hats as they passed by the flags and the troopers in attendance.

Once the entire school completed the Freedom Walk, the third, fourth and fifth graders moved into the cafeteria for a freedom presentation to the entire school.

The subjects for the presentation were the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Before the students presented, the principal spoke a few words on the topic and troopers posted the flag.

The students filed out of the cafeteria after the assembly and shook the hands of the Troopers.

"This was an amazing experience for me,” said Spc. Misty Damiano, one of the troopers in attendance. “There was so much patriotism; it really made me proud to do what I do.”

Dugger expressed the importance of her students learning how to properly greet someone, and also be able to thank the men and women who represented all the Soldiers who serve in order to protect and ensure their freedoms.

“I'll definitely be volunteering the next time they have an event," said Damiano.
