INDIANAPOLIS - Lt. Col. Walter Finney retired from the Indiana Army National Guard, Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, in a ceremony held at the 38th Infantry Division headquarters.

The ceremony was held shortly after Finney relinquished command of the 38th Infantry Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion.

During the retirement ceremony, Finney received several recognitions and awards presented by friends and coworkers, including recognition for his wife Belinda who was thanked for her support to her husband and to the Indiana National Guard.

Finney’s career spanned 36 years and began in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1977. He joined the Indiana Army National Guard in 1985 as a specialist. He was accepted as an officer candidate in 1988, commissioning as a second lieutenant as an ordnance officer.

“It’s been a long ride but a good ride,” said Finney “thanks to the Indiana National Guard. They didn’t have to let me play this long, but thanks to [Ret. Maj.] Gen. Umbarger and [Maj.] Gen. Wood they let me play and I appreciate it.”

Finney’s awards and recognitions include the Quartermaster Corps Order of St. Martin, enrollment in the Legion of Hoosier Heroes and an interim Meritorious Service Medal presented by division commander, Maj. Gen. David C. Wood.

“They say amateurs talk tactics, but professionals talk logistics,” said Wood, “and this man is a professional. He knows the logistics arena better than anyone, and he improved our readiness.”

Finney has also been the logistics officer in charge for the 38th Infantry Division since 2009 and was charged with preparing the division for its current disaster response readiness mission.

“I’ve never seen someone more focused on getting a unit ready, he did a great job and will be missed,” said Col. Gordon Ellis, deputy commanding general, 38th Infantry Division.

Finney will be returning to work for his former employer Indiana Power and Light.
