FORT HOOD, Texas – Career counselors from across the 1st Cavalry Division came together to compete for the title of division career counselor of the year here Oct. 22 - 23.
Staff Sgt. Derrick Sullivan, a career counselor with Headquarters Support Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cav. Div. was selected as the division’s career counselor of the year, and will go on to represent the First Team during the III Corps Career Counselor of the Year competition.
“It feels great,” said Sullivan. “Most definitely a big accomplishment and achievement, not just for myself, but also for Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. It feels really great.”
The contest took two days to finish and consisted of an Army Physical Fitness Test, a written exam, and an appearance in front of a board comprised of senior career counselors.
The written exam tested each counselor on their knowledge of the regulation governing the Army retention program.
“Going in front of seniors to answer questions they think you really should know, but at that moment you don’t know - that was the hardest part,” said Staff Sgt. Tamikka Lewis, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cav. Div.
The job of an Army career counselor is to help Soldiers that want to stay in the military longer than their first enlistment.
“I will continue to ‘live the legend’ for America’s First Team,’” said Sullivan.
