Combat readiness and tactical proficiency are two of the most important factors Marines have to maintain. To assist in advancing themselves and others in these fields, Marines with Division Combat Skills Center run Basic Urban Skills Training at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 27.

The Marines with DCSC run BUST that prepares Marines from around 2nd Marine Division for what they should expect in case of a deployment to a Middle Eastern country.

“The past three conflicts were mostly urban terrain,” said Sgt. Dakota Juanchi, chief instructor for the Basic Urban Skills Training course. “Now that we aren’t fighting jungle warfare, [Marines] need this training to go forward.”

DCSC pulls Marines from throughout the Division and trains them to become combat instructors so they can pass on the skills and fundamentals that are necessary for all Marines.

Juanchi said the Marines with DCSC come from different military occupational specialties so they’re able to bring different lessons and advice to the students.

The Marines who take part in the training run by the DCSC get the ability to receive classroom instruction and hands-on training.

“This is a two-week course. The first week is in the classroom and the second week is in the field,” said Sgt. Richard Brown, an instructor with DCSC. “We teach them the basic tactics and they come out here and apply the fundamentals.”

Brown, who is a tank crewman by trade, added that coming to DCSC opened him up to a new environment and a new set of tactics because of how rarely he used infantry training.

“[Instructing] helps me understand and helps me learn the things that I had forgotten as a basic rifleman,” Brown said.

Though some units believe the training DCSC offers isn't necessary, many Marines believe otherwise.

Juanchi added that due to the ability to provide efficient training, the Division Combat Skills Center is absolutely necessary for 2nd Marine Division.

”It gives the Division a chance to send their Marines away from their unit without having to worry about tying up assets,” Juanchi said. “With that, we’re able to train longer, harder, and more efficiently.”
