BUFFALO, N.Y. - Ask any veteran about their drill instructor and they would tell you the story of the first day of basic training, a drill instructor coming onto their bus and the chaos that ensued; talk to them longer and you would learn how influential the drill instructor was to guide them and build them into the soldier they were, the soldier they will forever be.
This is probably why former U.S. Army drill instructor and combat engineer turned U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District Chief of Project Management Tom LaVean was able to connect so easily with veteran students of Niagara University and help guide them through their federal job search.
“What an honor it was to sit down and talk with the veterans,” said LaVean. “Each one of them had a different story and needed advice in a different area of their search. I was able to provide them information on current job announcements, Schedule A and veteran hiring authorities, and the wide array of opportunities which are available in the federal government.”
Lavean was at Niagara University supporting the District’s Equal Employment Opportunity program to grow a more diverse workforce letting students know about upcoming “Pathway Intern Program” positions in the District, as well as, other potential openings.
“Building a more diverse workforce helps all employees in the District,” said Judy Phillips, USACE Buffalo District equal employment opportunity officer. “Diversity allows us to approach challenges in a variety of ways and better connects employees to our customers.”
“I know that I was able to help the veterans that I talked with”, LaVean said. “I hope to see some of them working here in the Buffalo District or USACE one day; who knows I could have just helped my future boss get a job!”
