FORT HOOD, Texas - Spouses get a glimpse of what their significant others go through to gain the spurs, but the competition also helped bring Families and spouses of the First Team closer together.

Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division hosted a division-wide spouse spur ride here Oct. 29.

The event brought more than 30 spouses to the Great Place to experience what it means to earn the silver spurs.

Not only did spouses get a glimpse of what their significant others go through to gain the spurs, but the competition also helped bring Families and spouses of the First Team closer together, said Lt. Col. Jesse Phillips, commander of HHBn, 1st Cav. Div.

“It’s about bringing the families in, making them a part of the organization and allowing them to experience what our troopers have to do to earn their silver spurs,” said Phillips.

During the event, First Team spouses teamed together to navigate six obstacles from the air assault obstacle course, push a Humvee, carry a litter, haul five gallon water cans, and flip a tire.

Then, teams fired pneumatic M4 Carbines and M9 pistols at the engagement skills trainer. After the challenges, each team was given a quiz on military history and knowledge.

“I had so much fun,” said Christie Wood, a spouse who participated. “I didn’t know anyone on my team, except for one girl. Since doing the spur ride, I’ve talked to all the other team members, and I just feel like we’re closer because of the event.”

Megan Bills, wife of 1st Cav. Div’s Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Michael Bills, said the more involved the spouses are and the more they know about what their military spouses are going through, the closer they often become in their relationships.
